What Is Tongue Tie?
Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) occurs when the thin piece of tissue underneath the tongue (the frenulum) is shorter, tighter or less flexible than usual, restricting tongue movement. This can make feeding more challenging for some babies by affecting their ability to latch, create suction and transfer milk effectively.
It’s important to remember that not every tongue tie requires treatment. Some babies feed well despite having a tongue tie, while others experience significant feeding difficulties. A thorough assessment is the best way to understand whether tongue function may be contributing to your feeding concerns.
Common Signs of Tongue Tie
Many of these symptoms can have causes other than tongue tie, which is why a comprehensive feeding assessment is so important.
Our Tongue Tie Assessment
Our consultations are designed to look at the whole feeding picture, not just the appearance of the tongue.
During your appointment we will:

- Discuss whether tongue tie may be contributing to feeding difficulties

Tongue Tie Division (Frenulotomy)
If our assessment indicates that a tongue tie is significantly affecting feeding, we may recommend a frenulotomy.
A frenulotomy is a quick procedure that releases the restrictive frenulum, allowing the tongue to move more freely. The procedure takes only a few seconds and is performed by appropriately trained practitioners using sterile equipment. Babies are usually comforted immediately after the procedure with cuddles and feeding.
